Six Grocery Money Saving Apps to Download Now

I’m  always amazed to hear from co-workers and friends how much they budget, or lack there of, on groceries.  Did you know that in order to meet the USDA nutritional standards an average family of 4 can expect to pay around $130/week on a thrifty budget?

Yikes, that’s $6,700 a year!

Not to mention that a good chunk of that money is probably going to waste due to over consumption or taking the easy way – eating out.  I’ll admit there are days that I too resort to the hassle free option.

But if you’re like me and want to beat that thrifty budget I have a couple easy tricks up my sleeve that have saved me over $600!  Here are some grocery apps that will save you $$$.

1.  Ibotta

Unlock rebates not only on groceries but other shopping categories by scanning your purchased product barcode and receipt.

How it works:

  • Sign up for free with your e-mail address, Facebook or Google+ account.  Ibotta is offering a welcome bonus of $10 once you submit your 1st receipt!
  • Download the mobile app on your iOS or Android phone.
  • Browse categories and stores to view available rebates and unlock those rebates you would like to receive.
  • After shopping, scan your product barcode and submit a photo of your receipt to receive your money back!
  • Once you reach $20, withdraw cash to your PayPal or Venmo account or you have the option of purchasing a gift card.

2.  SavingStar

Offers grocery only rebates redeemed similarly to Ibotta but also allows you to link your store loyalty cards for automatic redemption.

How it works:

  • Join free with Facebook or your e-mail address.
  • Download the iOS or Android available app.
  • Select grocery offers.
  • Post-shopping, automatically receive money back if using a loyalty store card. Otherwise scan purchased product barcodes and capture a photo of your receipt.
  • Link your bank or PayPal account and cash out after reaching $5.

Pros:  I really like the fact that you don’t have to reach a high minimum to cash out.

Con:  it does take a couple days for redeemed offers to post to your account. However I give them credit for shortening the span since I joined a couple years ago.

3.  Checkout 51

Another grocery saving app that offers rebates by submitting receipt snapshots.

How it works:

  • Sign up for free with your e-mail address or Facebook account.
  • Download the iOS or Android app to your phone.
  • Select offers by clicking on the star icon.
  • After purchasing your products, upload a picture of your receipt to receive your $.
  • Cash out once your account balance reaches $20 and your check is in the mail!

Pros:  Offers a weekly $.25 offer on produce and does not require most offers to be redeemed at specific stores or a barcode scan.

Cons:  High cash out minimum and pay out option.

4.  Shopmium

Offers grocery rebates as a way to encourage users to discover new products.

How it works:

  • Join with your e-mail address or Facebook account.  Use my referral code to receive an offer for a free Lindt Chocolate bar!  Referral code:  GYMEFEQC
  • Download the app for iOS or Android phones.
  • Redeem offers by scanning product barcodes and snapping a picture of your receipt.
  • Offers are approved within 24 hours and deposited directly to your PayPal or bank account.

5.  BerryCart

Great app for organic, non-gmo and gluten-free products.

How it works:

  • Register with your e-mail address.
  • Download the iOS or Android app.
  • Browse deals and learn about those you’re interested in purchasing.
  • After shopping, snap a picture of your receipt and money will be deposited into your account within 24 hours.
  • Once you reach $5 transfer your cash to Paypal or select a giftcard.

Pros:  Great for Whole Food shoppers and organics stores.

Cons:  Requires you to learn about the product, a quick read.

6.  MobiSave

My favorite grocery saving app and it’s fairly new.  If you don’t want to bother with scanning product barcodes check this app out.

How it works:

  • Download the free iOS or Android app.
  • Join free with your e-mail address.
  • Select offers and shop.
  • Redeem your offers by scanning an itemized receipt from any store.
  • Money is deposited to your PayPal account within 24 hours!

Cons:  Nada, I love this app!  If you want to give mobile grocery coupons a try, let this be it!
